Refinery 29 has a great article in the New York Shopping Guide Series, Off the L: The Best Boutiques in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, highlighting unique local Brooklyn shops that are "must-visits." This area of Brooklyn is perfectly described: The shops in this neighborhood reflect the unique spaces where they're housed, be they former machine shops, warehouses, or homes, and have a distinctively high-low Brooklyn flavor.
I was happy to see Old Hollywood, Bird, Alter, Oak and Sprout Home among the shops listed. Like I always say, if you're in Manhattan, don't be afraid to cross the bridge - you'll like what you see!
On a side note, if you live in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles or San Francisco, I suggest signing up for Refinery 29 Local Edition to receive a newsletter on what's hot in your area. (photo sources: refinery29.com)

As many times as I've been to NY, I've only been to Brooklyn once and then it was only to stay in the hotel. We went into the city to party. My next trip needs to have a stop in Brooklyn.
